The year is 1715 and players take charge of notorious British pirate Edward Kenway during the so-called Golden Age of Piracy.
Fans will be delighted to hear that Black Flag features a huge open world with the balance of play divided between land and sea. Players can complement that freedom with a gung-ho approach or stealth as they explore Havana (Cuba), Kingston (Jamaica), and the pirate refuge of Nassau (Bahamas).
Corrupting the Caribbean
Kingston features a lot of natural terrain for Kenway to take advantage of. Your pirates’ home from home, Kingston has dense foliage and woodland to hide in as well as industrious regions to explore.
In contrast Havana’s Spanish colony looks quite modern with gorgeous European-style buildings populating the landscape. Kenway can swing from ledges, climb walls, and jump across rooftops.
Nassau is the hideout of the notorious Blackbeard and his scurvy-ridden clan. As well as the islands Kenway will stumble across Mayan architecture, tobacco plantations, caves, jungles, and many other new areas.
Bloodthirsty sea battles
Kenway will also be able to sail his own ship – which can be upgraded throughout the game – called the Jackdaw. Kenway will also be able to recruit his own brutal band of buccaneers.
You’ll need them. Kenway will be fighting with and against some of the most infamous pirates to have ever lived including the fearsome Blackbeard. Jolly Roger creator Calico Jack also features as does his lover and one of the first female pirates ever, Anne Bonny.
Players will also be able to plunder nearby vessels with Kenway being given the choice to either disable the ship and invade, or blow the ship to smithereens.
Hunting, swimming, and marauding multiplayer
Fans of the series will be pleased to know that the hunting elements of Assassin’s Creed III return for Black Flag. Kenway will also be able to swim underwater thanks to the use of a diving bell allowing him to hunt for and harpoon deadly sea creatures.
Multiplayer has also been confirmed for Black Flag and features new maps and characters. Multiplayer battles play out on land, while developer Ubisoft Montreal has also confirmed DLC is on its way.
