Nintendo Direct Shows The Company’s Still Full Of Imagination

With a smile on his face and a wave Satoru Iwata kicked off Nintendo Direct and showed that, for all the company’s struggles, Nintendo still has a lot of tricks left up its sleeve.

The latest Nintendo Direct on 18 December was called to show off Nintendo’s plans until spring 2014, and it didn’t disappoint.

The Wii U may not have set the world alight yet but it’s a fantastic console which will be supported by some incredible software in 2014. There were also some great 3DS announcements on show.

Nintendo Direct served as a reminder of why Nintendo is still one of the most creative forces in the gaming industry, and why you should never underestimate its ability to surprise.

Mario Kart 8

Nintendo know how to torture us. Mario Kart 8 is high on our wish lists for next year and they tantalised us by releasing a trailer showing two minutes of brand-new footage.

Mario Kart 8 will appear in spring with the trailer showing off an awesome airplane track (from Mario Sunshine?), more anti-gravity racing, and new characters Rosalina and baby versions of Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Speaking of Rosalina…

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS

A trailer for the fourth Super Smash Bros. confirmed that Rosalina and her star companion Luma will be playable characters in the upcoming crossover brawler.

They join Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog in the roster, with the trailer also showing a level inspired by classic Mario Kart track Rainbow Road.

Hyrule Warriors

Easily the most surprising bit of news was a crossover between The Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors working under the title Hyrule Warriors set to hit the Wii U next year.

It’s a bizarre mix but all doubts were settled when we saw the trailer. You can never have too much HD Zelda, and Link taking on hundreds of on-screen enemies and punishing them with the Master Sword is a real visual treat.

NES Remix

Out today on the Wii U NES Remix takes 16 classic old-school Nintendo titles and mixes them up to present WarioWare style challenges. More than 200 stages are available to unlock and also features 8-bit stamps to use on MiiVerse.

Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Zelda and Dynasty Warriors wasn’t the only mash-up Nintendo talked about. Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will come to the 3DS on 28 March.

Wright and Layton’s gameplay styles will be mixed as the professor looks to solve puzzles surrounding accused witch, Espella, with our Ace Attorney representing her at the trial.
